The gold medal-winner is the first singer to take home the prize in eleven years
The 72nd annual Royal Overseas League (ROSL) Music Competition was held last night at London’s Wigmore Hall. The Gold Medal final featured four soloists: Jordan Brooks on violin, Ignas Maknickas on piano, Daniel Shao on flute, and Dafydd Jones on tenor, all competing for the top prize of £15,000.
The panel of judges included John Gilhooly CBE (chair), Geoff Parkin, Alexandra Dariescu, Angela Dixon, Chloë Hanslip, Gavin Henderson CBE, Linda Marks, Tom Randle, Melvyn Tan, and Sue Thomas. They awarded the top prize to tenor Dafydd Jones. An Aldama scholar studying with Nicky Spence and Caroline Dowdle at the Royal College of Music, Jones is also performing the role of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival this season.
ROSL Artistic Director Geoff Parkin remarked on the competition, noting that Dafydd stood out with his magnetic stage presence, exceptional voice control, and interpretation of works by Welsh and French composers. Parkin expressed pride in welcoming him to the ROSL list of gold medal winners.
Founded in 1910, the ROSL supports artists and musicians across the Commonwealth by providing performance and exhibition opportunities to showcase their work to the professional arts community, media, and public.
