Following the dismissal of Jorge Telerman as director of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Julio Bocca has been appointed as his successor.
Bocca, a former ballet dancer who began with the Compañía de Ballet de Cámara del Teatro Colón, later enjoyed an illustrious international career, including a role as a soloist with the American Ballet Theater. He returned to the Buenos Aires theatre and won a Gold Medal at the V International Dance Competition in Moscow at the age of 18. Bocca retired in 2007.
According to various news sources and the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, Bocca will collaborate with Uruguayan Gerardo Grieco, who has previously served as general director of the Auditorio Nacional del Sodre and director of the Teatro Solís, as well as creator of the Sala Zitarrosa. The two are reportedly already working on a new plan for the Teatro Colón, set to be presented in early November.
Minister of Culture Gabriela Ricardes expressed her satisfaction with the appointment, noting that the new leadership duo has “demonstrated, in addition to their individual virtues, how to advance with the process that the Teatro Colón needs.”
