Sonya Yoncheva & Domingo Hindoyan: the soprano and conductor on their musical marriage
In the Autumn issue of Opera Now, we explore the world of a dynamic husband-and-wife duo, Sonya Yoncheva and Domingo Hindoyan, who continue to make waves in the opera scene. As they mark their 10th wedding anniversary, they discuss their life as a musical couple, their passion projects, and how they manage the demands of travel alongside family life.
The issue previews two operas. In Seattle, Tazewell Thompson’s new work Jubilee delves into the history of the 19th-century Fisk Jubilee Singers, an African American vocal ensemble from Nashville. Moving to Philadelphia, we explore Missy Mazzoli’s opera The Listeners, which is having its US premiere.
A new feature, ‘On a Role,’ offers an in-depth interview with a singer about their current role, starting with soprano Angel Blue, who will perform Tosca at the Royal Opera this July. ‘Behind the Scenes’ introduces casting administrator Ann Rawdon Smith from Glyndebourne, who provides insight into her role. Additionally, a new initiative addresses mental health in opera, with soprano Elly Broomfield sharing her journey through depression and healing via gardening.
Our live reviews cover the beginning of the summer opera season, including Glyndebourne, the opera fringe roundup, and productions in Germany, France, and Japan. The recording reviews section is notably comprehensive, featuring new recordings by Golda Schultz, Nadine Sierra, Pretty Yende, Erin Morley, and Covent Garden. We also review new operas by John Adams, Louise Bertin, and Paul Moravec. Oliver Leith discusses his opera Last Days on Platoon in the recordings Q&A, which has received five stars.
