Giancarlo Guerrero has been appointed as the Sarasota Orchestra’s seventh music director. He will serve as music director designate during the 2024-25 season before officially stepping into the role in the autumn of 2025.
Currently the music director of the Nashville Symphony, a position he has held for 16 years, Guerrero will transition to music director emeritus with that organisation in 2025-26. His tenure in Nashville has been marked by 13 Grammy nominations and six wins, as well as the premiere of two dozen new works and the release of 21 commercial albums.
In a statement, Guerrero expressed his enthusiasm for the new role: “I am delighted to become Sarasota Orchestra’s next music director. From my first rehearsal with them last winter, I was immediately impressed with this orchestra, comprised of outstanding musicians who take great pride in their work. The preparation and joy in music-making were evident, and the conversations with the organisation’s members revealed a strong sense of pride and ambition for the future. It is a great honour to be invited to lead the orchestra at this pivotal time, and I look forward to contributing my artistic vision to ensure a vibrant future for the orchestra and the Sarasota-Manatee community.”
Guerrero’s inaugural performances as music director designate with the Sarasota Orchestra are scheduled for November 8-10, 2024, with additional concerts planned for January 30-February 2, 2025.
Beyond his roles in Nashville and Sarasota, Guerrero has collaborated with prestigious ensembles such as the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and Philadelphia Orchestra.
